While Smith County itself is a dry county, the city of Tyler does allow wine sales within its boundaries.

Smith County, TX boasts three fine higher educational institutions. These include the University of Texas, Tyler Junior College and Texas College, all located in Tyler. Also, found here is the East Texas State Fair, where Smith County residents enjoy livestock competition, fine fruit and vegetable vendors, arts and craft shows and live entertainment. The annual rodeo draws visitors from all around Texas, partaking in true western tradition. Smith County, Texas has much to offer visitors and residents alike, with fine fishing and hunting opportunities and the peaceful natural beauty that the wooded, rolling hills of the Piney Woods are famous for.
